Charlatan is a born salesman. He had a great career going for himself. Until arrogance and greed seduced him into hawking dangerously defective products. For example, a sales trip through Kentucky peddling home-brewed 'low-calorie beer' left a lot of blind hillbillies in its wake. After a class-action lawsuit, all he had left was a warehouse full of fatally faulty merchandise. The poverty that followed pushed him over the edge. He modified his hazardously defective gadgets into more deadly devices and began using them to commit acts of crime to get him his money back.

* "Johnny Human Torch" memorial costumes (masks explode to cause fire damage)
* "Jamie Jalapeno" cream pies (pepper-based irritants, thrown into faces to blind)
* "Suzie Supermodel" weight-loss tonic (causes disintegration)
* "Stakar Spaceman" rocket pogo stick (allows long leap at 100x the normal distance)
* "Ben Buzzkill" smokeless rocky ashtray (causes obscuring smoke for visual impairment)
